Dell laptop system board installation for the “do it yourselfer.”
Well, if you don’t know what a system board really is, it is just another name for the motherboard in your Dell laptop. A Dell laptop system board controls many of the life-sustaining hardware functionalities of your laptop and thus must be chosen cautiously and sagely.
Although Dell is a brand that is associated with quality products and parts, often even these parts fail due to operating conditions or any other reason. However, while your laptop can run without many parts like a DVD player, mouse etc, your laptop is as good as dead if the system board doesn’t work.
But what will you do if your Dell laptop breaks down and you need to replace the system board? Well, the most obvious answer would be that you should take it to a Dell service center and get it fixed. Of course, that is an obvious answer if you don’t mind paying a mindboggling price for the system board and in the name of service charges.
A better alternative and an economical one would be to order a system board online. Yes, a similar and original system board purchased from a spares reseller will cost you much lesser than what the producer will charge you. In addition to this you’ll also save the humongous service charges if you install it yourself. Installation is Surely not rocket science and anybody can do it.
However, before buying a Dell laptop system board you must be sure about the model that you should purchase. There are a host of companies like Dell, MSI, ASUS and others which manufacture Dell laptop compatible system boards. However, every laptop series invariably is compatible with only a select few models of system boards and therefore you must be extremely careful while ordering one.
In case you are not sure, it is always a good policy to email the seller beforehand and affirm which systemboard would work with your laptop and which ones won’t. The motherboards that work well with the inspiron series don’t work with latitude and vice versa. In fact many sub models of these two series also work only with specific models of systemboards.
Once you have received a compatible systemboard, it is time to replace the old one with a new one. Turn off the laptop and remove the charger. Next, remove the battery and the CD-ROM drive. Now keep it top side down and remove all the screws from the base of the laptop. Remove the hard disk and RAM.
Now keep it back in normal position and using a small screwdriver remove the plastic strip that joins the screen and the keyboard. Now remove the wire that connects the systemboard with the keyboard. Now remove the screws that hold the screen in place. Once you have unscrewed the screen, slowly remove the cables that join it with the base. In a similar fashion remove all the parts connected to the motherboard and connect them later to your Dell laptop systemboard.
