Learning all about the Brass Instruments
When you force air into the instruments such as modern brass instruments you will come to know that all the instruments will resonate in a different way i.e. a wide variety of tones will be produced at different frequencies. Trumpet, trombone, baritone, sousaphone (tuba), and French horn all are included in these instruments.
The two types of brass instruments are valves and slide. Valves include instruments like cornet, trumpet, and French horn which are used to change the shape and size of the instrument. While using their embouchure i.e. the position and strength of the lips on the mouthpiece of the instrument, a musician must know how to make the tones lower or higher in pitch the different combinations of valves to produce a particular tone. Slide brass instruments change the tone of the instrument and the length of tubing with the help of a slide. Slide trombone is the most common slide brass instrument.
Brass ensembles could be accompanied by a piano while playing. The ensemble’s performance can be improved with the help of an experienced pianist as he will make them rehearse the most challenging passages. But to be able to communicate with whole the group a pianist should know the different keys and how they function on a brass instrument.
Most of the big bands which swing, dance, and jazz and contain a large number of brass instruments also include a piano. Sometimes the pianist helps in providing the chord structure, rhythm, and even the melody of the piece. Big bands provide quite a complex music for the chord structure and progressions. While playing the same chord as the grouped brass instruments the pianist can also contribute to the rhythm and style of the music at the same time.
Surprisingly, many of the brass instruments like the French horn are not made of brass at all. Basically they are made out of some alloys of copper, tin, and nickel or from nickel silver.
