WoW – The Warlock’s Guide

Gamers Notebooks

My World of Warcraft warlock guide will endeavor to describe to you all you’ll need to understand to begin the warlock class. Warlocks are well known for their shadow magic and fire magic spells and especially for their ability to conjure and enslave demonic minions. The spells available to the warlock class are primarily focused on inflicting excruciating pain and anguish. Though warlocks are unable to go head to head in a melee fight, they easily compensate for it by hurling devastating spells from a distance. Unique to the warlock class are soul shards, which are consumed by various spells and must be scavenged from defeated mobs. Warlocks are possibly the fastest leveling class particularly when soloing. When raiding, warlocks can do huge amounts of damage and need to be careful not to draw aggro off of the main tank.

Allowable races for the warlock class are restricted to Blood Elves, Gnomes, Humans, Orcs, and Undead. The only kind of armor a warlock may use is of the cloth variety. They may only use wands, swords (some), staves, and daggers for weapons.

There are several demonic minions a warlock can summon including the Voidwalker, Succubus, Infernal, Imp, Felhunter, Felguard, and Doomguard. Each of the minions can be valuable, but you’ll need to weigh the advantages of each of them for the task at hand. Warlocks generally focus on DoT’s (damage over time) and DD (direct damage) spells, but they also possess some specialty spells that are handy including conjuring Soul Stones. They are able to make use of soul shards in order to conjure a variety of items and to perform resurrection on other players. Other abilities include self healing through the use of drain life, and crowd control with fear spells. One of the commonly overlooked perks that warlocks enjoy is that they don’t need to pay nearly as much as other classes do to get their mounts (Felsteed and Dreadsteed).

The Affliction talent tree uses talents that are meant to improve a warlock’s curses, drains and damage over time spells. When raiding and farming, this is a great talent spec for a warlock. It is arguably the best spec for speed leveling.

The Demonology talent tree specialization concentrates primarily on spells and additional benefits for your demonic minions that make them stronger and more lethal. Demonology is a good specialization for survivability, PvP and leveling. If you want to build the most effective minions, this is the spec you want.

The Destruction spec uses talents that increase the power of a warlock’s fire and shadow spells, which are mostly direct damage spells that can be used to quickly take out one mob. The Destruction spec is best used much later in the game, as it can be hard to stay alive long enough to make use of it effectively at lower levels. It requires lots of soul shards, is not mana efficient, and it is hard to use for those who wish to play solo.
